There’s something special about discovering a new, first-rate barbershop and taking time out to pamper your hair while exploring an unfamiliar city. Thankfully, there are plenty of excellent barbershops in Amsterdam, which range from classy award-winning establishments to cooler modern stores.

At this popular hangout in central Amsterdam, guests can relax, enjoy some high-quality coffee and chow down on delicious kiwi-style meals before – or after – getting their hair cut. Due to the store’s varied services, it essentially serves as a laid-back meeting-point where style-conscious Amsterdammers (and travellers) can mingle and experience world-class barbering. Although Cut Throat has a handy reservation system on its website, the barbershop also encourages guests to turn up unannounced and will happily take walk-ins.

2. Van de Hare Amsterdam Barbers

Store

As Van de Hare was founded way back in 1934, it ranks among the longest-running barbershops in the Netherlands. Over the years, this well-established family business has won many awards for its outstanding contributions to grooming and developed into one of the most respected barbershops in Amsterdam and beyond. Although it was originally located on Amstelveenseweg in southern Amsterdam, Van de Hare has since moved to a historical canal house in the city’s centre, which has been renovated in order to meet demands related to modern hairdressing. A third-generation barber named Marc van de Hare currently runs the store alongside several other highly-experienced and friendly staff members.

Aside from selling stylish clothes and interior items, Amsterdam’s super trendy Hutspot department store features an open-plan barbershop on its ground floor. This two-seat establishment offers many different services at affordable prices, ranging from quick buzzcuts to professional straight razor shaves. Its owner, Martijn, has worked as a barber for over 10 years and takes reservations from Tuesday to Sunday every week. To make customers feel extra welcome, the barbershop provides patrons with complimentary beer or whiskey during every grooming session. Afterwards, customers at Hutspot’s barbershop can check out the store’s current collection or relax at its on-site lunchroom.

4. HIS Premium Barber Shop

Store

HIS Premium Barber Shop sells an impressive array of quality men’s grooming products and offers many different sophisticated grooming services, including haircuts, waxing and shaves – making it the perfect spot to pick up essential cosmetics or enjoy a well-earned styling session. The shop was established in 2007 and has developed into an all-in-one hotspot for men’s grooming where clients are treated with the utmost hospitality. The store is located on the tail end of Amsterdam’s Utrechtsestraat – a popular shopping street that is famous for its high-end fashion retailers.

This friendly neighbourhood barbershop shares its floor space with a popular record store called Eardrum Buzz Records, which stocks hundreds of second-hand and brand new vinyl. Both establishments have an extremely laid-back atmosphere and share a stereo system that plays good tunes throughout the day. The barbershop mainly uses haircare products made by Dutch ecological cosmetics company O’right, who are dedicated to producing sustainable, eco-friendly cosmetics. Although it is possible to make an appointment through their website, Cut the Crap will gladly take walk-ins during their opening hours – when possible.
